Just like most people, I can't travel all the time (even though travel to me is like water for the soul.) I've lived in Los Angeles for 5 years now and have found to be completely bored with my city. I live in West Hollywood, work in Hollywood, my friends are all Hollywood and so basically, I only hangout in... you guess it... Hollywood. This is why I decided to try the Trulo Adventure Day.
Last Thursday, I filled out my Adventure Request and within 24 hours, I was matched with an LA local in Manhattan Beach. This Manhattan Beach local planned out my adventure day, sent me my itinerary, and by Friday, I had my weekend plans made. I brought along a friend and here's what our day looked like in Southbay.
10:30AM - Arrive in Manhattan Beach - park at City Hall (all day free parking).
10:45AM - Hop on over to Paradise Bowls for a healthy and Instagramable breakfast. I was warned that this place would be packed and it would take about 20 minutes to get my bowl - and yep that was absolutely accurate! While we wait, we check out a few cute stores close by. I end up splurging and buying a beach towel in the shape of a watermelon... (#goals).
11:15AM Once we pick up our bowls, we head down to the beach - just 2 short blocks. We eat our yummy bowls (which by the way, were totally worth the wait), go for a dip and get our glow on.
1:30PM Thankfully, they have showers at the beach so we rinse off and head to Rockefeller for some lunch. Rockefellar is a super cute industrial-style restaurant with fairly inexpensive food. I order the tomato and avo salad and my friend gets the Mexican street tacos. So far so good.
3:00PM Our next stop is The Strand House which has a live band playing and we grab a mojito with an ocean view and listen to the band play Sublime - throwback to the high school days!
4:30PM After a boozy mojito we head just across the street to Shellbacks Tavern which is a TOTAL dive bar - we order a pitcher of beer and before we even know it, we get invited to play flip cup on their specifically designed flip cup tables - with some Southbay locals. The juke box is playing "Call Me Maybe" and I wonder if I accidentally time traveled back to college.
6:00PM Needing to start sobering up, we head to dinner at Little Sister - this place is so cute! It's Asian Fusion and literally everything on the menu sounds bomb. We order the crab dumplings, grilled octopus and the lemongrass saigon noodles - all to share. YUM!
7:30PM After dinner we walk over to Manhattan Beach Creamery which is the cutest dessert shop I've ever seen. We grab an ice cream cone and watch the sunset on the beach.
Overall, I think the experience was definitely worth it! Getting out of my Hollywood bubble for the day made me feel like I went on a mini trip (only 45 minutes away) and experienced LA through the eyes of someone else. I signed up to be a Local and can't wait to do it again in a different part of town.
