If you're part of the Trulo Tribe, you love to travel. Excessive travel can lead to some unhealthy habits though. Staying fit while traveling can be difficult... after all, most of us love cocktails and comfort food while on the road (did I hear you say Pina Coladas?!?) But know that it IS possible to relax, do a little indulging and keep the pounds at bay. I’ve come up with five tips to help you stay in shape while on the road, and no it does not include spending hours in the gym ;)
1) WATER IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!
While on the road we tend to drink and eat more than we do at home. Not only that, but we tend to eat and drink things that our bodies may not be used to digesting on a daily basis.
Drinking enough water is crucial to help our body function properly and maintain a healthy weight. Also, most times when we think we are “hungry” we are actually dehydrated... so I suggest you drink a big glass of water when you feel hungry, wait about 10-15 minutes, and THEN if you are still hungry, indulge in something small.
P.S. Cocktails do not count in your water intake for the day ;)
2) WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD IT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE
Hi my name is Marina Santos. I am a personal trainer, fitness model and I LOVE to eat!
If there is one thing my clients will never hear from me is to give up foods they love or not indulge a little while traveling. When it comes to food I truly believe you can have your cake and eat it too. But maybe have only one slice versus the whole thing... it's all about BALANCE!
When traveling try to think about what your priorities are. First thing in the morning, think about your day and what you really want to do and eat/drink. If for you having a few cocktails on the beach is a must, then maybe choose to have a salad for lunch and drink a glass of water in between each cocktail. If you are going to an awesome restaurant and you know you'll be having a big meal for dinner, then try to eat lighter before hand and the next day.
The important thing is to balance the bad with the good while traveling, and being aware of what you are consuming is the first step to achieving that.
3) HAVING FUN = STAYING IN SHAPE
Staying in shape while traveling does not have to mean going to the gym every day. What is important is that you stay active... Plan fun (and active) activities that you enjoy doing. Try to have at least one activity planned each day for at least one hour. Now the possibilities are endless when it comes to activities, and wherever you are I am sure there’s soooo much room for activities (Step Brothers anyone???).
Here are a few examples:
Go swimming or snorkeling.
Go on a hike or trek. This is a big one for me and I do it everywhere I go. There’s something so gratifying about hiking/trekking somewhere where modern ways of transportation can’t go. Besides, the views are always worth it!
Try something adventurous. It could be white water rafting, climbing, biking, sailing... Anything your heart desires.
Take a walking or biking tour. It's also such a great way to explore the city and meet new people.
4) DO THE RIGHT WORKOUTS
If I said I didn’t workout while traveling I would be lying... however, on average, I only do it twice a week for about 30 minutes (this is in addition to the other activities mentioned above).
Nobody wants to spend a lot of time working out while on vacation but the truth is you don’t have you. I recommend you do HIIT and/or circuit workouts at least twice a week. You can get a lot more accomplished doing a high intensity workout for a short period of time rather than spending hours doing cardio at the gym. You will be surprised what a difference only 15-30 minutes makes when it comes to staying in shape.
If you have no idea what HIIT is or what workouts to do, you can go to my Facebook Page. My page is FULL of workouts you can follow along. I also do a new live workout every week!
Hopefully I’ll see you there ;)
5) SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP
I think most people will agree that sleeping is plain awesome and we wish we could do it more. Yet what many people don’t realize is that getting enough sleep is crucial not only for our health and well-being but also for maintaining a healthy weight.
Getting enough sleep will give you more energy to be active throughout your day. It will help stop late night cravings and binge eating. And according to a study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, getting enough sleep helps increase your resting energy expenditure (the amount of calories you burn while at rest). So it's important you get at least seven hours of sleep each night.
